Nimloth

Lineage and marriage

Nimloth was one of the Sindar of Doriath, of the kin of Thingol: the genealogies of the Silmarillion make her the daughter of Galathil, brother of Celeborn, and so a great-niece of the King. She married Dior Eluchíl, the son of Beren and Lúthien, while they were living in Ossiriand, and bore him twin sons, Eluréd and Elurín, and a daughter, Elwing, born by the falls of Lanthir Lamath in F.A. 503. She is not to be confused with Nimloth the White Tree of Númenor, which shares her name.

Queen of Doriath

When Thingol was slain and Melian departed, Nimloth went with Dior to Menegroth and became queen of the restored kingdom. Her time there was short. In the winter of F.A. 506 the sons of Fëanor, seeking the Silmaril that Dior wore, attacked Menegroth without warning. Dior was killed after slaying Celegorm, and Nimloth was slain in the same assault. Her young sons were taken by Celegorm's servants and abandoned in the winter forest, never to be found; Elwing alone escaped, carried away with the Silmaril.

Legacy

Through Elwing, Nimloth is the ancestress of Elrond, Elros and the Kings of Númenor, and her Sindarin blood is the last strand of the line of Thingol's house to run into the Half-elven.
