Landroval

Two ages

Landroval is named twice in the histories, in two different ages. In the First Age an eagle called Landroval was one of the two vassals of Thorondor who flew with him to the gate of Angband in F.A. 466 and helped to bear Beren and Lúthien away to Doriath. In the Third Age Landroval is the brother of Gwaihir, lord of the Great Eagles of the Misty Mountains, and both brothers are said to be of Thorondor's line. Whether the same bird lived through both ages or the name descended with the lineage, the texts do not say. Gwaihir is described as the greatest of the eagles of the Third Age; Landroval, his brother, is named in the same breath, and his epithet marks the breadth of his wings.

The War of the Ring

On March 25, T.A. 3019, when the Nazgûl swept down on the host of the West before the Black Gate, Gwaihir and Landroval led all the eagles of the north out of the sky and drove the Ringwraiths back. When the Ring was destroyed and the Nazgûl fled to their ruin, Gandalf rode on Gwaihir into Mordor, and Landroval and the young Meneldor flew beside him. Over Mount Doom they saw two small figures lying on a hill in a sea of fire, and Landroval was one of the three who carried Frodo and Sam out of the burning land. Nothing further is told of him.
