Ori
Blue Mountains; Erebor; Moriab. Unknown, Third Age · d. T.A. 2994
Ori, kinsman of Dori and Nori, was one of Thorin's thirteen companions on the quest of Erebor. He went with Balin to Moria in T.A. 2989 and wrote the final page of the Book of Mazarbul before dying with the last of the colony beside Balin's tomb.
Biography
Origins
Ori was a Longbeard of the exiled community in the Blue Mountains and the youngest of the three purple-hooded Dwarves, Dori, Nori and Ori, who came to Bag End together and are generally understood as brothers. Like them he was of the old stock of Moria rather than of the royal house, and he played the flute at Bilbo's party.
The quest of Erebor
Ori went through every stage of the quest of Erebor with Thorin Oakenshield: the trolls, the goblin tunnels, the Wargs and Eagles, the spiders of Mirkwood, the Elvenking's cells, the barrels, and the weeks on the Mountain. He fought in the Battle of Five Armies and survived, and afterward lived at Erebor under Dáin Ironfoot.
Moria and death
In 2989 Ori joined Balin's expedition to refound Khazad-dûm. He was a scribe of the colony, and the Book of Mazarbul, the record found by the Fellowship, was written in part in his hand, a large bold script using the Elvish letters, which Gandalf recognised. After Balin's death in November 2994 the Orcs stormed the halls, and Ori wrote the last page of the book by the light of a failing lamp in the Chamber of Mazarbul: the Watcher in the Water had taken Óin at the West-gate, the survivors could not get out, and drums were sounding in the deep. He died there with the last of the colony, and the Fellowship found his book beside the tomb in January 3019.
