Bombur

Origins

Bombur was of the Longbeards of the old stock of Moria, not of the royal house, and joined Thorin Oakenshield's company with his brother Bofur and his cousin Bifur. He was already very fat when the quest began, the last of the Dwarves to arrive at Bag End, where he landed on top of Bofur and Thorin in the doorway, and he was usually at the back of every march and the loudest in complaint about missed meals.

The quest of Erebor

Bombur's weight is a running theme of the journey. In the goblin tunnels and the flight from the Wargs he was a burden to be hauled along, and on the eagles' eyrie he refused to be carried. His most memorable misadventure was in Mirkwood: when the company crossed the black stream that ran across the forest path, a leaping deer upset the boat and Bombur fell into the water. He was pulled out in an enchanted sleep from which nothing could wake him, and for days the others had to carry him through the forest, growing hungrier and more desperate as they went. When he finally woke he remembered only a dream of a woodland feast, and it was the memory of that dream that helped draw the company off the path toward the Elves' fires. He survived the spiders, the Elvenking's dungeons and the barrels, and fought in the Battle of Five Armies.

Later life

At Erebor after the quest Bombur only grew larger. By 3018, when Glóin described the company's fortunes at Rivendell, Bombur could no longer walk from his couch to his table and needed six young Dwarves to move him. He was still alive then; nothing else is recorded.

Survived the quest and lived at Erebor, growing so heavy that he had to be carried; still alive in T.A. 3018.
