- Town
Michel Delving is the chief town of the Shire, set on the White Downs in the Westfarthing. It is the seat of the Mayor, the home of the Mathom-house museum, and the site of the Lockholes in which Lotho's Men imprisoned hobbits during the War of the Ring.
- Region
The Mittalmar were the Inlands of Númenor, the raised central region of the star-shaped island, a country of turf, low downs and few trees. The Meneltarma stood at their heart, with the Valley of the Tombs at its foot and the Kingsland of Armenelos to the north-east.

Mount Dolmed was the great peak of the Blue Mountains between Nogrod and Belegost, beneath which the Dwarf-road crossed into Beleriand and under which the Shepherds of the Trees destroyed the last of the Dwarves who had sacked Doriath.
- Region
Nan-tathren, the Land of Willows, was the flowery country where the Narog flowed into the Sirion above the coast. Loved by Ulmo, it was the place where the fugitives from Gondolin rested and where Tuor first felt the call of the Sea.

The Narog was the chief river of West Beleriand, rising at Ivrin beneath the Ered Wethrin and flowing south through the gorge where Nargothrond was delved, before joining Sirion above the Land of Willows.
- Forest
The Nísimaldar, the Fragrant Trees, were the woods about Eldalondë on the Bay of Eldanna, grown from trees the Eldar brought out of the West. Six sweet-scented kinds were remembered by name, and among them grew the mallorn, whose seed passed at last from Númenor to Lothlórien.
- Valley
The Noirinan was the Valley of the Tombs, a rock-walled cleft at the southern foot of the Meneltarma where the Kings and Queens of Númenor were laid in chambers cut into the cliffs. From its head sprang the river Siril, and from it the winding way climbed to the summit of the holy mountain.

Nurn was the southern region of Mordor around the inland Sea of Núrnen, where great fields worked by slaves fed Sauron's armies. After the fall of Sauron King Elessar freed the slaves and gave them Nurn as their own land.
- Mountain range
The Orocarni, the Red Mountains, were the range in the far east of Middle-earth beneath which lay Cuiviénen. Streams from them fed the Water of Awakening, and those Elves who refused the summons of the Valar remained in their shadow.
- Region
The Orrostar was the eastern promontory of Númenor, the arm of the star that pointed toward Middle-earth. Cooler than the southern regions, it was sheltered by highlands along its north-eastern edge, and its inner parts grew much of the grain that fed the island.
- River
Rauros was the great waterfall by which the Anduin left the lake of Nen Hithoel and dropped out of the Emyn Muil onto the plains above the Wetwang. Boromir's body was committed to the river above it on February 26, 3019.
- Forest
Region was the dense southern forest of Doriath, lying between the Esgalduin and the river Aros. Menegroth was delved on its northern edge, and its thickets were the heart of Thingol's guarded land.
- Realm
Rhudaur was the eastern of the three kingdoms of divided Arnor, lying between the Weather Hills, the Ettenmoors and the Misty Mountains. The least Númenórean of the three, it fell under the influence of Angmar early, and its hill-men fought against Arthedain until the realm was swallowed entirely.
- Place
Sarn Athrad was the stony ford where the Dwarf-road crossed the Gelion below the inflow of the Ascar. It was the gateway between the Blue Mountains and Beleriand, and the place where Beren and the Green-elves destroyed the Dwarves of Nogrod returning from the sack of Menegroth.
- Lake
Tarn Aeluin was a clear mountain lake in the highlands of Dorthonion, said to have been blessed by Melian. After the Bragollach Barahir and his twelve companions hid beside it, and there all but Beren were slain through the treachery of Gorlim.
- Ruin
Tharbad was a fortified river-port and bridge-town on the Greyflood, at the southern edge of Eriador, built by the Númenóreans in the Second Age and maintained by Arnor and Gondor. It decayed through the Third Age and was abandoned after the floods of 2912, leaving only a dangerous ford where Boromir lost his horse.

The Ettenmoors are a bleak, troll-haunted highland in north-eastern Eriador, lying north of Rivendell between the Weather Hills and the Misty Mountains. They formed the southern march of Angmar and were the home of the trolls that troubled the Trollshaws and the Road.
The Old Forest Road, called Men-i-Naugrim by the Elves, was the ancient road of the Dwarves that ran straight through Mirkwood from the Old Ford of Anduin to the plains beyond. By the late Third Age it was overgrown and its eastern end lost in marsh, so that Thorin's company took the Elf-path to the north instead.
- Mountain range
The Weather Hills are a line of hills running north from Weathertop toward the North Downs in central Eriador. Fortified by Arthedain as its frontier against Rhudaur and Angmar, they were bitterly contested in the wars of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries of the Third Age.
- Plain
The Withered Heath is the barren upland between the two eastern arms of the Grey Mountains, north of the Lonely Mountain, where the dragons of the North bred. It is marked on Thrór's map, and from its worms came the ruin of the Dwarves in the Grey Mountains and, by tradition, Smaug himself.
- Island
Tol Brandir, the Tindrock, was the tall, inaccessible island that rose from Nen Hithoel at the brink of the falls of Rauros, between the hills of Amon Hen and Amon Lhaw. No living creature had ever set foot on it.
- Valley
Udûn was the deep, ring-shaped valley just inside the Black Gate of Mordor, closed at its inner end by the Isenmouthe. It served as the mustering-ground of Sauron's northern armies, and Frodo and Sam were driven through it in an Orc-column on the way to Mount Doom.
