Kíli, younger son of Dís and nephew of Thorin Oakenshield, was the youngest of the thirteen Dwarves on the quest of Erebor. Inseparable from his brother Fíli, he fell beside him in the Battle of Five Armies defending their uncle.
Mistress of Bag End (briefly)
Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, born a Bracegirdle of Hardbottle, spent eighty years coveting Bag End and feuding with Bilbo, only to be imprisoned by her own son's ruffians when she attacked them with her umbrella. Released a heroine, she gave Bag End back to Frodo and her fortune to the homeless.
Chief Shirriff (self-styled)
Lotho Sackville-Baggins, the son of Lobelia, bought up half the Southfarthing with Saruman's money, imported Men to enforce his rule and made himself Chief of the Shire, only to become a prisoner in his own hole and to be murdered there by Wormtongue.
Captain of Doriath
Mablung of the Heavy Hand was the chief captain of Thingol's Doriath. He cut the Silmaril from the belly of Carcharoth, fought at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, escorted Morwen and Nienor toward Nargothrond and lost them to Glaurung's malice, and died defending the Silmaril in Menegroth when the Dwarves of Nogrod sacked the Thousand Caves.
Leader of the Third House of the Edain
Marach led the third and largest people of the Edain over the Blue Mountains into Beleriand in F.A. 313 and settled them in Estolad. His great-great-grandson Hador gave the house its lasting name.
Founders of the Shire
Marcho and Blanco, two Fallohide brothers of Bree, obtained leave from King Argeleb II in T.A. 1601 to settle the land beyond the Brandywine and led the great crossing of the Bridge of Stonebows that founded the Shire. Shire Reckoning counts its years from their crossing.
King of Gondor
Meneldil, son of Anárion, was the last man born in Númenor and the first king to rule Gondor alone. Left in charge of the South Kingdom by his uncle Isildur in T.A. 2, he made Gondor an independent realm and founded the line of kings that descended from Anárion.
Queen of the Valar
Nienna is the Vala of grief, pity and endurance, sister of Mandos and Irmo, who dwells alone and weeps for every hurt in Arda. Her tears watered the mound of the Two Trees, and Olórin, who became Gandalf, learned from her the compassion that shaped his whole mission.
Nimrodel was an Elf-maiden of Lothlórien who lived beside the mountain stream that bears her name and was loved by Amroth the king. She fled the wood when the Balrog woke in Moria and was lost in the White Mountains on the way to the sea; her story became a song that Legolas sang to the Fellowship at the stream's edge.
Master of the Old Forest
Old Man Willow is a vast and ancient willow on the Withywindle in the Old Forest, a tree with a rotten heart and a waking, malicious will whose influence spreads through the whole wood. He trapped Merry and Pippin in his trunk and tipped Frodo into the river until Tom Bombadil sang him to sleep and set the Hobbits free.
King of the Teleri of Aman
Olwë, brother of Elwë Thingol, led the Teleri who completed the Great Journey to Aman after his brother was lost, and became King of the Falmari at the Swanhaven of Alqualondë. He refused Fëanor the ships of his people, and the Noldor took them by force in the first Kinslaying. Through his daughter Eärwen he was the grandfather of Finrod and Galadriel.
King of Nargothrond
Orodreth, second son of Finarfin in the published Silmarillion, held the tower on Tol Sirion until Sauron drove him out, and became King of Nargothrond when his brother Finrod left on the quest of the Silmaril. Under the sway of Túrin he abandoned the secrecy that had kept the city safe, and he was slain at the battle of Tumhalad in the year Nargothrond fell.
King of the Silvan Elves of Greenwood the Great
Oropher, a Sindarin lord of Doriath, led his people east after the drowning of Beleriand and was taken as king by the Silvan Elves of Greenwood the Great. He founded the Woodland Realm, withdrew it northward from Dwarves and Noldor alike, and died in a rash charge at the Battle of Dagorlad, leaving the crown to his son Thranduil.
Vassal of Ulmo
Ossë is a Maia of Ulmo, master of the seas that wash the shores of Middle-earth, a lover of storms who was once nearly won over by Melkor. He befriended the Teleri on the coasts of Beleriand, persuaded some to remain as the Falathrim, anchored Tol Eressëa in the bay of Eldamar, and taught the Sea-elves the building of ships.
The Hasty Ent
Quickbeam, Bregalad in the Elvish tongue, is a young and unusually hasty Ent of Fangorn, a shepherd of rowan trees who cared for Merry and Pippin during the Entmoot and, in the assault on Isengard, came within reach of catching Saruman himself.
Rían, daughter of Belegund of the House of Bëor, married Huor two months before the Nirnaeth Arnoediad and bore his son Tuor after his death. Leaving the child with the Elves of Mithrim, she went to the Hill of the Slain and died there.
Mistress of Bag End
Rose Cotton of Bywater, the farmer's daughter whom Samwise Gamgee thought of on the road to Mordor, became his wife, the mistress of Bag End and the mother of thirteen children. Her death after sixty-two years of marriage set Sam on his last journey to the Havens.
A great dragon of the Grey Mountains, slain early in the Third Age by Fram son of Frumgar, lord of the Éothéod. His hoard set the Northmen and the Dwarves at feud, and a silver horn from it, carried south by Eorl, became the horn that Éowyn gave to Merry.
Captain of the Tower of Cirith Ungol
Shagrat was the Uruk captain of the Tower of Cirith Ungol, the fortress guarding Shelob's pass into Mordor. He took the paralysed Frodo prisoner, killed his rival Gorbag in the fight that destroyed both their companies, and escaped to Barad-dûr with Frodo's mithril-coat and cloak, which the Mouth of Sauron later displayed at the Black Gate.
Seventh Ruler of Númenor
Tar-Ancalimë, daughter of Tar-Aldarion and Erendis, was the first Ruling Queen of Númenor under her father's new law of succession. Raised by her mother to distrust men, she married Hallacar only to secure the sceptre, ruled for two hundred and five years, and let her father's havens and alliances in Middle-earth decay.
Master-smith of Nogrod
Telchar of Nogrod was the most renowned smith of the Dwarves in the Elder Days. He forged the knife Angrist, the sword Narsil that became Andúril, and the Dragon-helm of Dor-lómin, and his fame lasted into the Fourth Age.
Wizards of the East
Alatar and Pallando, the Ithryn Luin or Blue Wizards, were the two Istari chosen by Oromë who passed into the East of Middle-earth with Saruman and never returned to the West. Nothing certain is known of their work, and it was feared that they failed in their mission.
Chief of Goblin-town
The Great Goblin was the huge chieftain of Goblin-town beneath the High Pass of the Misty Mountains, who captured Thorin's company in T.A. 2941 and was killed by Gandalf in his own hall. His death set the goblins of the North on the road to the Battle of Five Armies.
Lieutenant of the Tower of Barad-dûr
The Mouth of Sauron was the Lieutenant of the Tower of Barad-dûr, a Black Númenórean sorcerer who had served Sauron so long that he had forgotten his own name. He rode out from the Black Gate on 25 March 3019 to offer the Captains of the West terms of surrender, and was answered by Gandalf.
