Nahar

The hunter's steed

Nahar was the horse of Oromë, the Vala of the hunt. In the sun his coat was white, and in the dark it shone silver. The Elves gave him his name in imitation of his voice, for his neighing was a sound they came to know. When Oromë rode out of Valinor to hunt the creatures of Melkor in the dark lands of Middle-earth, it was on Nahar that he rode, and the beating of Nahar's hooves and the horn of Oromë were the two sounds that the servants of the Enemy feared most in the wilderness.

Cuiviénen

Nahar's most famous moment came in the Years of the Trees, when Oromë, hunting far in the east, came upon the newly awakened Elves beside the lake of Cuiviénen. He rode Nahar, and the Elves heard the hooves and the horse's cry before they saw the rider. Melkor had already been among them in the dark with rumours and shadows, and he had made the Elves fear a great rider who would hunt them; some ran away at the sound and were lost. But those who stayed saw the light of the Blessed Realm in Oromë's face and were not afraid. So Nahar carried the Vala to the meeting of the Powers with the Firstborn, and afterwards, when the Eldar set out on the Great Journey to the West, Oromë rode Nahar at their head.

The West and the horses of Men

The Rohirrim knew Oromë as Béma, and their lore held that Felaróf and the Mearas descended from horses that Béma had brought out of the West over the Sea. The texts do not name Nahar as their sire, but the belief points at him.
