Khand
Also calledThe Land of the Variags
Khand was a little-known land south-east of Mordor whose people, the Variags, joined the Wainriders and Haradrim against Gondor in T.A. 1944 and fought for Sauron on the Pelennor Fields.
Description
Beyond the south-eastern corner of Mordor, past the open lands of Nurn, lay Khand, a country of which the Men of Gondor knew little except that it existed and that its people were enemies. Its inhabitants were called the Variags, and they were counted among the Easterlings and Southrons who served Sauron. Their land lay between the deserts of Far Harad and the eastern lands of Rhûn, so that armies could pass from the East to Harad through it without approaching Gondor, and Sauron's tributaries could reach Mordor's undefended eastern side by way of it.
No description of Khand's cities, rulers or customs survives in the histories of the West, which mention its people only when they came to war.
History
In T.A. 1944 the Wainriders, planning their great assault on Gondor, made alliance with the Men of Khand and of Near Harad, so that while the Wainriders came from the north the Variags and Haradrim attacked from the south through Ithilien; the southern army was defeated by Eärnil. In the War of the Ring the Variags marched with the host of Mordor, and on March 15, 3019 they fought on the Pelennor Fields beside the Haradrim and the Easterlings against Rohan and Gondor, and were destroyed with them. After the fall of Sauron King Elessar made peace with the peoples of the East and South, and nothing further is recorded of Khand.
Geography
Khand lay south-east of Mordor, east of Near Harad and south of Rhûn, in lands beyond the reach of Gondor's maps.
