Belfalas

The southern coast of Gondor curved around the Bay of Belfalas, the wide gulf into which the Anduin and the rivers of Lebennin emptied and across which lay the coast of Harad and the haven of Umbar. The fief of Belfalas was the western part of that shore, a country of headlands and river-mouths between the Morthond and the Gilrain, with the White Mountains behind it and the sea before. Its people were sailors and fishermen as well as farmers, and among the fiefs of Gondor they were the most purely Númenórean in blood, for the Faithful had settled this coast before the Downfall. Its chief place was Dol Amroth, and its lords were the Princes whose house had a strain of Elvish blood in legend. The Elves too had known this coast: at Edhellond near the Morthond's mouth there had been an Elf-haven from the Second Age, whence the Elves of Lórien sailed west in the days of Amroth.

Belfalas was given as a lordship to the ancestors of the Princes by Elendil at the founding of Gondor, and it remained loyal to the kings through the Kin-strife and to the Stewards after. Its coast suffered from Corsair raids out of Umbar in the centuries after 1448, and in the Long Winter of 2758 the Corsairs landed along the whole shore. In March 3019 Imrahil led the men of Belfalas to Minas Tirith, and the fief's ships and sailors were among those who manned the captured Corsair fleet that Aragorn brought up Anduin from Pelargir. In the Fourth Age Belfalas was part of the Reunited Kingdom under Imrahil's heirs.

Belfalas lay on the coast south of the White Mountains between the mouths of the Morthond in the west and the Gilrain in the east, with Anfalas beyond the Morthond and Lebennin to the east. The Bay of Belfalas stretched south to Umbar.
