  Barliman Butterbur was the fat, bustling and forgetful landlord of the Prancing Pony at Bree, whose failure to forward a letter from Gandalf nearly cost Frodo his life. Good-hearted for all his muddle, he sheltered the hobbits on the night the Black Riders came and welcomed them back a year later to a troubled Bree.

  Bill Ferny was a sly and ill-reputed Man of Bree who spied for the Black Riders, sold the hobbits a starved pony at an extortionate price, and later joined the ruffians who troubled Bree and the Shire, ending as a gatekeeper on the Brandywine Bridge until Merry threw him out.
