Thorin III Stonehelm

Lineage

Thorin was born in T.A. 2866, the son of Dáin Ironfoot, who was then Lord of the Iron Hills. He was seventy-five when his father became King under the Mountain after the Battle of Five Armies, and he grew up as heir of Erebor in the long prosperity of Dáin's reign. He was named for Thorin Oakenshield, whom his father had succeeded.

The Battle of Dale

In March 3019, while the War of the Ring was decided in the south, Sauron's Easterlings attacked Dale. On March 17 King Brand of Dale and King Dáin were both killed at the gate of the Mountain, Dáin standing over Brand's body, and the survivors of both peoples fell back into Erebor. Thorin took the kingship in the middle of the siege. Dwarves and Men held the Mountain for ten days, and when word came that the Dark Tower had fallen and the Easterlings lost heart, Thorin and Brand's son Bard II led the defenders out on March 27 and drove the enemy from Dale. He was called Stonehelm.

The Fourth Age

As King of Durin's Folk Thorin III ruled in friendship with the kingdom of Dale and with King Elessar in Gondor. It was in his reign that Gimli led part of the Dwarves of Erebor south to found the colony of the Glittering Caves and to make the new gate of Minas Tirith. The date of his death is not given. From him was descended Durin VII, the last of that name, who led Durin's Folk back to Khazad-dûm.

Ruled Erebor into the Fourth Age; the date of his death is not recorded, and his descendant Durin VII reoccupied Khazad-dûm.
