Bór
Chieftain of the Easterlings
Also calledBór the Faithful
East Beleriand, under the sons of Fëanord. F.A. 472
Bór was a chieftain of the Easterlings who came into Beleriand around F.A. 463 and, unlike Ulfang, kept faith with the Eldar. He and his three sons served Maedhros and Maglor, and in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad his sons slew the traitors Ulfast and Ulwarth before his whole house perished.
Biography
Coming into Beleriand
Bór was the leader of one of the two great companies of Easterlings, the Swarthy Men, who crossed the Blue Mountains into East Beleriand about F.A. 463, some years after the Dagor Bragollach had broken the northern leaguer. They were a different people from the Edain, shorter and darker, and Morgoth's rumours had gone before them, but the Eldar were short of allies. Bór brought his people to Maedhros and Maglor, who welcomed them and gave them lands, and he and his three sons, Borlad, Borlach and Borthand, took service with the sons of Fëanor. The other company, under Ulfang, served Caranthir.
The Nirnaeth Arnoediad
When Maedhros gathered his union against Angband in F.A. 472, the men of Bór marched in the eastern host. The battle was lost through the treachery of Ulfang's people, who had been secretly bought by Morgoth: Uldor delayed the eastern army with false alarms and then turned on it from behind. In that hour the house of Bór held true. His sons fell on the traitors and killed Ulfast and Ulwarth, Uldor's brothers, before they themselves were overwhelmed and slain. The histories record that all of Bór's kin died in that battle, so that of the faithful Easterlings none returned east. Their loyalty is set in The Silmarillion against the treachery of Ulfang's house, and the name Bór was afterward remembered with honour among the Eldar while the name of Uldor became a curse.
